Commissioned by EIT InnoEnergy, Energy Watch developed the 'Energy Autarky Simulation Tool (EAST). The goal of this simulation tool is to model the energy landscape in energy autarkic area’s and provide insight in what is needed to make specific regions or districts (such as villages or cities) energy independent (autarkic).
EIT InnoEnergy provides support for finalising and commercialising technological innovations that lead to new products and services in the sustainable energy sector. The goal is to achieve a sustainable energy future for Europe through innovation; by launching new ideas, products and solutions and supporting new businesses and new people to deliver them to market. EIT InnoEnergy has a network of 160 associate and project partners to build connections across Europe, bringing together inventors and industry, entrepreneurs and markets, graduates and employers, researchers and businesses.
It is recognized that radical changes are needed to boost the energy transition in Europe. One of the ideas is to create areas that are autarkic in terms of energy. That means that the energy infrastructure has no connections with the surroundings. For this, EIT InnoEnergy wishes to have a tool in which such a situation is modeled. In order to serve as useful input for discussions, communications and business case definitions, the simulation model needs to be adaptable to different situations, expandable, and the structure and results should be transparent.
