The energy transition is to a large extent a local transition, whereby agreement must be found between local objectives, local potential and actual realization. In the Dutch Climate Agreement (July 2018) this local character is recognized, and guidance and supervision are predominantly placed at the local level through so-called Regional Energy Strategies (RES).
This local character applies, for example, to the introduction of renewable energy sources on land, such as wind energy and solar energy. This requires a careful process to achieve local social support and proper spatial planning. The local character also applies to the built environment, where feasible and affordable solutions must be found to develop and realize sustainable homes and residential areas. This process involves all stakeholders such as residents, housing corporations, the construction sector and grid operators.
Energy Watch supports municipalities in developing a Local Energy Strategy, in which local potential, energy scenarios and subsequent activity plans are developed, guided and results monitored.
